An email we received from a parent after their child attended camp (their child is coeliac ).
Dear Chase and Brooke,
I am writing to you following my daughter’s stay on Monday-Wednesday this week with Bendigo South East College.
Amelia has been diagnosed with Coeliac disease for a number of years now and needs a strict gluten free diet as noted in her medical info sheet provided for the camp.
Amelia has been on quite a few school camps now and always gets stressed prior to attending and rarely eats while at camp. Although I make an effort to contact the camps prior to each stay and am always assured the kitchen has experience catering for coeliacs, Millie has always found a problem with her food preparation when she gets there. This results in her not eating while on camp as she can’t trust the kitchen and future distress whenever her annual school camp is scheduled as she thinks all camps will have the same issues.
Millie was quite anxious leading up to this camp and was in tears on Monday morning begging me not to make her go. We even packed a full backpack of safe gluten free foods for her to access while at camp if she needed so she would not go hungry.
I am writing this email because when Millie returned from camp she told me she actually ate the camp food while with you and did not even access the backpack of food we sent.
She felt safe with your processes and the cross contamination risk management practices in your kitchen. She said that although the camp food wasn’t what she would normally choose to eat, she felt the safest she has ever felt at a camp regarding her food and said the food served was great.
Thank you for looking after her needs so well and for helping her to trust food preparation in camps again.
Regards, Kat
